Codename NATO-66

A one-way mission into the depths of the cosmos. Allied High Command’s last-ditch effort to preserve Western democracy. Somewhere. For Sophie Weiss, it’s a tough pill to swallow. Not because it’s risky. Not because there’s anyone she’ll miss. But because she’s a soldier. This war is all she knows.

Centuries pass. The crew sleeps. Finally, they arrive an uncharted world, hundreds of light years from Earth. But they’re not alone here.

Another spacecraft enters the atmosphere, soon after they land. There is little doubt of its origin Earth. The enemy had been planning its own expedition, all along.

For Sophie, things seem right again. She was meant to fight this war. A war that claimed her family. Her childhood. Her humanity. But on this world, things are not as simple as they once were.

There is something else here. Something they can’t explain. And it’s been waiting.

For a very long time.

Progeny eBook J.R. Suarez Reviews

A richly imaginative story, filled with suspense from its opening to its breathtaking conclusion.

Eight humans on a US mission from a near-future Earth travel to outer galaxies in search of intelligent life. They discover a planet similar to Earth and with signs of intelligent inhabitants, but they have been followed by their earth-based enemies. While the groups compete to make first contact with the alien race, they uncover evidence of an earlier invasion and massacre of the residents of HD 98618C. Light years from home, and facing three sets of possibly hostile forces, the crew of the Argo must find strength in each other and in themselves.

In its broad contours, Progeny reminds me of the first three seasons of ABC's Lost Two rival groups of humans compete to explore and exploit an alien land, fighting as much with each other as with the uncharted terrain itself, and all the while aware that theirs is not the first to disturb the native population.

But Progeny succeeds where Lost fails the plot is tight, leaving no loose ends or bizarre dei ex machinae. The ensemble cast is managed well, the characters themselves following complex arcs as they explore the new planet and reflect on the Earth they left behind. And the battle scenes--well, let's just say there is a lot more to work with here.

Progeny draws liberally upon philosophical themes, rewarding readers familiar with Plato and Descartes. The parallels to Greek mythology and to our own history's conquests are inescapable as well, and Suarez displays impressive command of military terminology and strategy, ancient, modern, and futuristic.

At its best, science fiction invites the reader to explore the outer limits of human understanding, to imagine the impossible that lies beyond, and to reflect on the wonders and the dangers of the present. Progeny achieves all three, while remaining an entertaining and approachable book from a promising young author.
